「アルト・ハイデルベルク」として知られたウィルヘルム・マイヤー＝フェルスターの戯曲をもとにしたものは三度映画化されている。
最初のは、1923年のドイツ映画、白黒無声映画。
米国では、この戯曲をもとに、ドロシー・トネリーが台本・歌詞を、シグムンド・ロンバーグが曲をつけて全２幕５場の「学生王子(The Student Prince)」というオペレッタにした。1924年12月にブロードウェイのジョルソン劇場で初演されて以来、608回もロングランを続け、ロンバーグの作品でも最高のヒット作となった。オペレッタ黄金時代といわれる1920年代において画期的な成功をおさめた。
ロンバーグの音楽は、ウィーンのオペレッタの流れをひく格調高い伝統音楽に、新しいジャズのイディオムを組み合わせ、何よりも旋律の美しさとワルツやマーチを重視した構成に特徴をもっている。「学生王子」もその例外ではなく、至る所に珠玉のような美しい旋律がちりばめられていて、聴く人の心を魅了せずにはおかない。
このオペレッタを1927年に米国で映画化したのが二回目。
ノーマ・シャーラーとラモンノヴァロの主演、監督アーンスト・ルビッシュ。
1954年にアン・ブライスとエドマンド・パードムの主演で三度目の映画化が行われた。日本で公開された時はちょうど皇太子殿下ご成婚のニュースが世間を騒がせていたので、「皇太子の初恋」という邦題で上映された。この映画でパードムの歌のふきかえを世界的テノール歌手マリオ・ランツァが受け持ったのも当時大きな話題になった。 マリオ・ランツァの歌をどうぞ！！
