RX-7 Specs

Part 3

Until the latter years, RZs remained black. Somewhere down the line, RZs were dropped from the catalog again. In 2000 they were offered as a limited version in Snowwhite Pearl Mica. The final Spirit R was not named RZ but was the only grade for which Titanium Gray Metallic was offered. I wasn't around to see it myself, but upon close examination of pictures, one could notice some sticker behind the side turn lamps on the front fenders.

R-IIs originally came with a Bathurst sticker during the first few years. The sticker commemorated the number of consecutive victories the RX-7 had achieved in the legendary races held in a town of that name in Australia. Here again, the name Bathurst was slapped onto catalog models until 1996. Mine was a Bathurst but I didn't get any sticker. These were supposed to be the affordable ones with some bells and whistles, like the fog lamps, front air dam and Dolphin Tail wing on the rear hatch. There was a Bathurst X which came in white with a red leather interior.

One key point was 1995 when the original Venturi rear spoiler (notice there isn't a rear canopy wiper) was changed to the Dolphin tail. The Dolphin tail was kept until 1998 when the final rear spoiler was introduced. Despite specs indicating superior design over the Venturi, the Dolphin tail seems to have been obscured by people wanting to put the Venturi long after it was replaced by the Dolphin.

The final wing was adjustable and was pretty much the same design as the adjustable one by Mazdaspeed a couple years earlier. The Mazdaspeed version had a panel extending from one side to the other, attached onto the hatch right above the center stop lamp assembly. The final version simplified the design in such a way that air flowed smoothly around the bottom of the spoiler without agitating the airflow. That came with the latest front bumper with new turn lamps, and bigger apertures to provide better cooling. Improved cooling didn't warrant the need for twin oil coolers except for RS and R.
