Distributed Congestion Control Schemes for Carrier-Scale VoIP Services and its Evaluation

Summary:

Two congestion-control schemes for use on the carrier-scale with VoIP services are investigated. In operations of VoIP networks, it is important to maximize the number of quality satisfied completed calls, not the number of admitted calls. The schemes are distributed, simple, convenient, and do not require the establishment of a huge control system in the network. Call-admission control is executed either directly or indirectly by using test/reply packets to determine the state of the network and/or the receiving-side VoIP gateway. Characteristic values such as numbers of "quality-requirements-satisfied completed calls" and fairness are evaluated by simulation to demonstrate the validity of the proposed schemes. We are proceeding with this research by using the Network Simulation Tool "OPNET Modeler".
